How much is a contact lens exam without insurance?

Without insurance, a contact lens exam cost $109 to $209 at the US chains and eye doctor offices we checked on September 28, 2026. It costs more than a glasses-only exam because it adds a contact lens fitting. Where stores list the fitting as its own fee, it runs $55 to $150 on top of the eye exam, and toric or multifocal fittings can cost more.

Prices are set store by store. Many chain exams are done by independent optometrists who set their own fees, so check your local price before you book.

What is in a contact lens exam?

Two services, often on one bill:

  • The routine eye exam. Vision, eye health and a glasses prescription.
  • The contact lens fitting. The federal Contact Lens Rule defines it as the process that starts after the eye exam and ends when "a successful fit has been achieved." It may include measuring for lens specifications, an evaluation of the lens on your eye, and "medically necessary follow-up examinations."

You need the fitting to get a contact lens prescription. A glasses prescription alone is not enough to buy contacts.

Contact lens exam prices at US chains and offices

Cash prices posted on chain and store pages, checked September 28, 2026. "Total" means the exam and fitting in one price. "On top of exam" means a fitting fee added to the eye exam fee.

Chain Glasses-only exam Contact lens exam, total Fitting on top of exam, standard Fitting on top of exam, toric or multifocal Checked
America's Best (national price) $80 $130 Included Included Sep 28, 2026
Stanton Optical (most states) $79 $119 Included Included Sep 28, 2026
Warby Parker (3 store pages) $85 to $134 $140 to $209 Not listed Not listed Sep 28, 2026
LensCrafters (19 store pages) $69 to $175 $119 to $190 $55 to $150 Not listed Sep 28, 2026
Visionworks, Phoenix, AZ (independent doctor) $89 Not listed $70 $90 Sep 28, 2026
EverClear Eyes, Virginia Beach, VA (next to Visionworks) $70 to $85 $109 to $139 $60 to $90 Not listed Sep 28, 2026

Notes on the table:

  • Stanton Optical charges $129 for a contact lens exam in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alaska, North Dakota and South Dakota, and $109 for a glasses exam in Alaska and North Dakota.
  • LensCrafters store pages list an eye exam fee and a separate contact lens fee. Seven of the 19 say the contact lens fee includes the eyeglass exam (the total column). Six say it includes the fitting fee only (the on top column).
  • The Virginia Beach office charges $70 for an exam without dilation and $85 with dilation. Its $60 to $90 fitting fee applies if you had an eye exam in the last 3 months.

The routine eye exam

This is the part a glasses wearer pays too. At the stores above, the cash price ran from $69 (three LensCrafters stores in Illinois) to $175 (LensCrafters in Woodbridge, NJ). America's Best charges $80 and Stanton Optical $79 in most states.

The gap shows up when you add contacts. At America's Best, a glasses exam is $80 and a contact lens exam is $130, so contacts add $50. At Stanton Optical, $79 becomes $119, so contacts add $40.

The contact lens fitting fee

Standard vs toric or multifocal. Lenses for astigmatism (toric) and for near plus distance (multifocal) can cost more to fit. At the Visionworks office in Phoenix, a spherical fitting is $70. Toric, multifocal, gas permeable and monovision fittings are $90 each.

New wearers vs returning wearers. Under the Contact Lens Rule, a renewal fitting ends when the doctor finds no change is needed, and it does not include the initial evaluation of a lens on the eye. New wearers may pay for training too. The Virginia Beach office lists "Contact Lens New Wearer Training" at $25. America's Best offers insertion and removal classes for new wearers.

Follow-up visits and trial lenses

Ask what the fitting price includes. Some examples:

  • America's Best says its $130 contact lens exam includes "a fitting and evaluation as well as a follow-up exam."
  • The Virginia Beach office says all exams and office visits "include 3 months of free follow up care."
  • Stanton Optical's contact lens exam includes "a free pair of trial lenses."

If a follow-up or a second pair of trial lenses is not included, it can add to the bill.

Extras that can add to the bill

Some tests are billed on top of the exam:

  • Retinal imaging: $39 at the Visionworks office in Phoenix and at the LensCrafters store in Woodbridge, NJ.
  • Dilation: $15 at the LensCrafters store in Algonquin, IL and $65 at the one in Woodbridge, NJ.

Ways to pay less without insurance

  • Exam memberships. America's Best's Eyecare Club is $150 for three years and includes free contact lens exams, up to two a year. Stanton Optical offers a $20 membership, bought with a contact lens exam, that makes next year's contact lens exam free.
  • FSA or HSA money. IRS Publication 502 says you can include "the amount you pay for eye examinations" in medical expenses. Your plan sets the rules. More in can you use FSA or HSA for contacts.
  • Compare stores. The same chain can charge very different prices by location. The LensCrafters pages we checked ranged from $69 to $175 for the eye exam alone.

The exam is only part of the cost. For the lenses, see how much contacts cost without insurance and is a year supply of contacts worth it. If you have a vision plan, the fitting is often billed separately from the exam there too. See how much contacts are with insurance.

Your prescription after you pay

Under the federal Contact Lens Rule (16 CFR 315), the prescriber must give you a copy of your contact lens prescription when the fitting is done, whether or not you ask. They can ask you to pay for the exam, fitting and evaluation before releasing it, under conditions set in the rule. They cannot make you buy lenses from them, charge an extra fee for the copy, or make you sign a waiver.

A contact lens prescription generally lasts at least one year, unless your doctor sets a shorter date for a medical reason. When it runs out, you need a new exam. See expired contact prescriptions. How ordering lenses elsewhere works is in buying contacts online.

FAQ

Why does a contact lens exam cost more than a regular eye exam?

It adds a contact lens fitting. At America's Best, the glasses exam is $80 and the contact lens exam is $130. At Stanton Optical, it is $79 vs $119 in most states.

How much is a contact lens fitting on its own?

Where stores list it separately, $55 to $150 on top of the eye exam at the LensCrafters stores we checked. A Visionworks office in Phoenix charges $70 for spherical lenses and $90 for toric or multifocal.

Do I need a new fitting every year?

You need a valid prescription to buy contacts, and it generally lasts at least one year under federal rules. For a renewal, the fitting ends when your doctor finds no change is needed.
