What happens if your contact prescription is expired?
If the date on your contact prescription has passed, a legal US seller cannot fill it. You need a new contact lens fitting. An expired card is not a coupon. It is a stop sign.
How long a US prescription lasts
Contact lens prescriptions in the United States typically expire in one to two years, depending on your state. Your card, patient portal, or the copy your doctor is required to give you will have the date. If you cannot find a date, treat it as something to check with the office, not something to guess.
A glasses prescription is not a contact prescription. Contacts have a brand, a base curve, a diameter, and a fit that glasses never had. You cannot convert a glasses Rx into contacts at checkout. If you need a decoder for the numbers on the card, we wrote how to read your contact prescription.
Do not wait until the last blister to look at the date. Offices book out. An expiration that lands mid-week in a busy month is still an expiration.
Why the seller has to say no
Federal rules require contact lens sellers to sell only against a valid prescription. Valid means unexpired, and it means the parameters match. If you upload an expired Rx, or if your doctor is asked to verify one that has lapsed, the answer is no.
This is the same system as the 8-hour verification flow in how buying contacts online works. Silence from the office can count as verification only when the prescription is still good. An expired prescription is not a silence problem. It is an expiration problem.
Nobody reputable is going to "just ship this once." The shops that will are the ones you should not buy medical devices from. A discount code does not override a date.
What a new fitting actually is
You go back to an eye doctor. They check your eyes, they put a lens on, they confirm the brand and the numbers still make sense. Then they write a new prescription with a new expiration. That visit is also the checkup a lot of contact wearers skip until something feels wrong.
If your eyes hurt, your vision changed suddenly, or a lens that used to sit fine now does not, do not wait for a reorder to fail. Call the doctor. This is not medical advice. A blog cannot examine you.
Bring the old card if you have it. It speeds the "what were you wearing" part. It does not extend the old date.
You can often do a glasses exam and a contact fitting in one visit. You still leave with two prescriptions if you want both. One visit is convenience. It is not a merger of the two documents.
Leftover boxes
Unopened boxes you already bought on a valid prescription are yours. They are not a license to reorder. Watch the expiration printed on the box itself. That is a product date, separate from the prescription date, and it is not a suggestion either.
Do not stretch daily lenses to bridge the gap until your appointment. Dailies are one wear, then trash. Glasses exist for this exact week. If the leftover box is past its printed date, do not wear those either. Book the fitting, wear frames, start fresh when the new Rx is in.
FAQ
Can an online store fill an expired contact prescription in the US?
No. A seller is not allowed to. If a site offers to anyway, that is a red flag, not a convenience.
Does a glasses exam renew your contact prescription?
Not by itself. Contacts need a contact lens fitting. You can often do both in one visit. You cannot convert a glasses Rx into contacts at checkout.
How soon should you recheck before it expires?
Soon enough that you are not staring at an empty box on the expiration date. Offices book out. If you are already expired, book the fitting and wear glasses in the meantime.
