Are Costco contacts cheaper than the eye doctor?

Per box, Costco is often cheaper than a private eye doctor. That is not a cheaper year, and there is no single national winner. Check the same prescribed lens and the same box count on the same day. Membership, shipping, and the exam stay off that box price.

Per box, often. Per year, not automatically.

A box price is the charge for a pack. A year is every matching pack, plus any fee you pay only because of where you buy. A seller can win the box and lose the year.

VisionCostGuide, updated July 28, 2026, puts Costco about $5-$15 a box under an independent eye doctor. The same update says Costco boxes are often $20-$45, and it lists membership at $65. The guide's disclaimer says those are 2024-2025 averages. They are not a live counter quote, and they are not a national price for every brand. Add the $65 only when this order is why the membership would be paid. If you already pay it for other shopping, leave it off the lenses.

Vision Care Center PLLC, one Bellevue office, wrote on April 10, 2026 that the split is per box yes, and per year often no. That idea belongs to that office. It is not a national price, a rebate sheet, or an exam fee. A lower box does not close the year.

The gap moves with the lens, and when a fee left off the sticker is added back. A 2024-2025 average and a later spot check are not the same day.

Compare one prescription, not a shelf of products.

Match the brand. Match the power. Match the pack size. A lower price on another brand is not a savings on this prescription. Kirkland counts only when that lens was prescribed. If the prescription names a different brand, the Kirkland box is not in the contest.

Pack size is part of the match. The checks below keep an Acuvue Oasys 12-pack, a Biofinity 6-pack, and an Acuvue 2 6-pack in separate rows. Do not move a 12-pack price onto a 6-pack. Do not blend the rows into a new average. Price the pack you are buying, at each seller.

Hold membership, shipping, and the exam off the sticker until the boxes match. Membership is the warehouse fee. Shipping and processing are the online fee. The exam is the clinical fee. Each gets its own line. A tile that folded a fee in, or left a fee out, is not ready to compare. Write down the seller, the lens name, the pack, and the out-the-door total.

What the eye-doctor price is actually selling

The price at a private office is the retail price of the box that office dispenses. The exam can happen in the same building and still be a different charge. The gap cited above is VisionCostGuide's comparison with an independent eye doctor, limited to those disclosed averages. It is not a receipt with a local doctor's name on it.

Offices do not share one sticker. Clark.com, on September 4, 2025, did not publish an eye-doctor column. Clark compared Costco with other retailers and with websites. Do not take America's Best, or any other seller on that page, and relabel the number as the private-office price.

The office sticker buys that prescribed box at that office's price. It is not shipping, a rebate, an insurance allowance, or the fitting. If the office does not have the exact lens, the honest entry is no price. A different brand does not fill in.

What Costco is actually selling

Costco sells a warehouse price on boxes it carries. The number on the box is the lens price. Membership sits beside it, on its own line, under the rule above. Do not divide that fee across packs and call the result the shelf price. The shelf price was the box.

The warehouse price exists only for a lens Costco sells in the pack you need. A missing brand, power, or pack is a blank row, not a win. Kirkland does not fill that row unless the prescriber named Kirkland. A store brand is not a swap for the lens on the prescription.

That price is not the exam, and it is not a shipped checkout.

Where online fits, and where a low shelf price lies

Price the same box at a website only after the office and after Costco. Include the fees the product tile left off. That does not replace the eye-doctor comparison.

CNET, updated May 25, 2026, says online is usually cheaper than the eye doctor, and that Costco is cheap if you already have the membership. In that update, CNET's Acuvue Oasys example is about $25-$40 for 12, against a $103 figure CNET cites for LensCrafters. The $103 belongs to CNET. It was not measured for this page, and LensCrafters is not every private office. CNET's range and Clark's Acuvue Oasys price are separate checks on separate dates. Do not merge them into one Costco number.

Clark.com, on September 4, 2025, priced named packs and included no eye-doctor column. An Acuvue Oasys 12-pack was $69.99 at Costco, $78.39 at 1-800 Contacts, and $108.99 at America's Best. A Biofinity 6-pack was $38.87 at Costco, $31.24 at Lens.com, and $48.79 at 1-800 Contacts. No channel was lowest on every row.

Acuvue 2 is where a low shelf price fails. One Acuvue 2 6-pack was cheapest at Costco only after fees, at $38.02. Lens.com's low shelf became $68.13 once shipping and processing were added. The site looked cheaper until the fees were on the order. Use the out-the-door total.

A site can list a lens the warehouse does not carry. It still has to be the prescribed lens, in the same pack. How the seller must handle the prescription is a different article: buying contacts online.

The rest of the bill has its own pages

A vision plan allowance is not a box price. What plans pay is in how much contacts cost with insurance.

A manufacturer rebate can change who was cheaper after you buy. How rebates work is in how contact lens rebates work.

FSA and HSA money is a way to pay, not a discount on the box. The rules are in can you use FSA or HSA for contacts.

What contacts cost over a year, by channel, is in how much contacts cost.

Whether a year of boxes bought at once pays off is in is a year supply of contacts worth it.

The exam is a separate charge from every seller above. What it costs without insurance is in how much a contact lens exam costs without insurance.

FAQ

Are Costco contacts cheaper than the eye doctor?

Per box, often yes. That is not a cheaper year. Compare the same lens and box count, then add membership only if this order is why they would pay it.

Is online always cheaper than Costco?

Online is not always cheaper than Costco. A September 2025 check had a shelf price that lost once shipping and processing were added. On Clark.com's September 4, 2025 check, one Acuvue 2 6-pack was $38.02 at Costco after fees, while Lens.com's low shelf became $68.13.

Does the box price include the exam?

The box price does not include the exam. A cheaper box is not a reason to switch brands. The exam, on its own, is in how much a contact lens exam costs without insurance.

If you already have the prescription, you can check Tuesday.
